About Matt Smith
 MRI Service Engineering

Founder of Matt Smith MRI, providing independent career guidance and industry insights based on first-hand experience working in MRI field service since 2017.

I’m Matt Smith, an MRI Field Service Engineer and the founder of Matt Smith MRI.

I have worked in MRI field service since 2017, supporting complex medical-imaging equipment across the UK. Before moving into MRI, I developed experience working with other types of medical equipment, giving me a broader foundation in healthcare engineering and field service.

I created Matt Smith MRI to provide clear, independent information about MRI Service Engineering careers and to help engineers understand how they can enter and develop within this highly specialised industry.

My engineering career

My route into MRI Engineering was not a single direct step. I developed my experience gradually through several medical-engineering roles, each of which provided skills that eventually helped me move into MRI Field Service Engineering.

I gained my initial engineering experience through an apprenticeship with a private medical-engineering company. This involved working in GP practices and other healthcare environments, carrying out tasks including medical-equipment servicing, functional testing and reporting, secure data removal, and the decommissioning and removal of imaging equipment.

I then moved into a role based at a large NHS hospital, specialising in anaesthetic and ventilation equipment. This gave me direct experience working within a busy clinical environment, supporting essential medical equipment and understanding the standards, responsibilities and pressures involved in healthcare engineering.

My next opportunity was leading an anaesthetic and ventilation department for a large medical-equipment company. I worked both in the workshop and in the field across the UK, developing further experience in technical fault-finding, equipment maintenance, customer support, independent field service and team leadership.

In 2017, this combination of medical-equipment knowledge, field-service experience and transferable technical skills helped me secure an opportunity with a major medical-imaging company. I was then provided with extensive product training to become an MRI Field Service Engineer.

Since moving into MRI, I have gained extensive practical experience working directly with MRI systems, hospitals, customers and technical specialists. My own career journey gives me first-hand insight into how engineers can use experience from other industries to enter MRI Engineering—even if they have never previously worked on an MRI system.

Why I Created Matt Smith MRI

When I entered MRI Service Engineering, it was difficult to find clear information explaining the qualifications, experience and career routes employers value.

Most publicly available information concentrates on MRI radiography or medical physics rather than the engineers responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing MRI systems.

I created Matt Smith MRI to help close that gap by sharing:

  • Practical guidance on entering MRI Service Engineering

  • Information about qualifications and transferable experience

  • CV and interview advice

  • Realistic insights into field-service work

  • Career experiences from engineers across the industry

  • Free and paid resources for aspiring MRI engineers

  • A growing professional community for MRI Service Engineers

Everything I publish is informed by genuine industry experience and written to be understandable to both experienced engineers and people exploring the profession for the first time.

My publishing approach

The guidance on Matt Smith MRI combines my own professional experience with publicly available information and contributions from other industry professionals.

Where an article contains personal observations, I make that clear. Information that may change, such as salaries, employers and training opportunities—is reviewed and updated where possible.

The website does not publish confidential service information, proprietary documentation or material belonging to equipment manufacturers or employers.
